Diversity is great. Life is diverse. However, why completely change our comic books and do this? I try not to discuss anything that is controversial here, but I feel as if this is really necessary for me to post. Marvel has recently gone through an era where a lot of the classic heros were replaced with characters of minority races, or of opposing gender.
For example:
- Bruce Banner hulk to Amadeus Cho and She-Hulk
- Thor Odinson Thor to Jane Foster Thor
- Tony Stark Iron Man to Riri Williams Ironheart
- Peter Parker Spider-man to Miles Morales Spider-man
- Steve Rogers Captain America to Sam Wilson Captain America
- T’Challa Black Panther to Shuri Black Panther
The examples above are essentially the most famous changes. The main problem with this is that our classic marvel characters that people want to read about and watch about are being removed. Be honest: No one wants Riri Williams, we want Tony Stark. This can be applied for pretty much every character except for Miles Morales. At least we had Miles Morales comics going on as the same time as Peter spidey. Bruce Banner, Odinson, Steve Rogers, and T’Challa were completely gone. Our original characters were perfectly fine the way they were. Succeeding financially, being put on the big screen, and then BAM! We get a new wave of our beloved characters made into Social Justice Warrior (SJW) clones. I am not bashing on the talented writers or artists that put out these comics, I’m explaining why the character choices are not needed. I’ve never met a Ironheart fan. Never. If you’re a fan of Ironheart, please contact me and give me some valid points why. Anyways- continuing on. The counter-argument I hear in this situation is that “Marvel is full of white characters and needs more females/minorities.” In my opinion, if you’re saying this, it’s inaccurate and flawed. There are hundreds of famous female Marvel characters- Black widow, Scarlet Witch, Enchantress, Frigga, Spider-Woman, Rogue, Captain Marvel, Emma Frost, Mystique, Invisible Woman, Ms. Marvel, and just hundreds more. There’s also hundreds of asian characters- Shang-Chi, Wong, Hogun, The Ancient One, Silver Samurai, Classic Dr. Strange, etc. Some of the biggest Marvel characters right now are black- Black panther and Luke Cage. Cottonmouth, Miles Morales, Falcon, Bishop, Storm, Blade, and War Machine are all african-american characters. While Marvel has done a good job and has kept all the “diversity” characters into Champions, and have given us back our classic characters, it seems like there’s more to come. The last few runs of Hunt for Wolverine are out, and a new X-23 comics is coming in. A new Ironheart and Shuri comic are coming out. Marvel could very easily cut out the current comics of classic characters (Iron man, Immortal Hulk, Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda) and give us more diversity characters. Let me ask you: Could you see the racism accusations if Black Panther was turned white? Marvel could fall into an “SJW” era again, while DC is giving New 52 Superman, Batman, and more classic characters.
To wrap things up, there is no problem with diversity. However, diversity is problematic for Marvel comics- not only on a small scale by affecting readers, but on a large scale by making the company look bad. If Marvel wants diversity, make new characters and keep our classic characters still there. Marvel is a great company, with great characters. Our classic characters should never be replaced or killed off for the sake of diversity.
