After seeing many people throw around or damage their comic books, I decided to write here about how to keep them in good condition. This blog is for informational purposes, you don’t have to follow this.
What Not to Do
It’s very unwise to take your single issue comic books and just throw them around, or leave them on bookshelves while not bagged. This can tear, warp, or bend the comics. When eating or drinking around them, be extremely careful, as this can result in ruining the comics. Comics that are: folded in half, torn, have stains, or water damage will be of lesser value.
How to Protect Comics
Bag and board your comics. It’s as simple as that. It will cost you around $20.00 to purchase the supplies needed to do this. Regarding the bags, you should get them depending on what size comic you have. Golden, Silver, Bronze, Current/Modern. Current/Modern comics are most likely what you’re reading right now. Current/Modern comic book bags are slightly different. I believe “Modern” ones are a bit more snug, and “Current” ones have a bit more space. They both work great. You can pick these up in all comic book stores. Now regarding the boards: Boards are usually a thin piece that you can insert behind the comic book in the bag, to help reduce risk of bends, and it can also make it more sturdy. Remember to buy Modern/Current size for both. Once you have these materials, you are going to want to pick up a board and find the shiny side. Next, pick up the bag, and make it so the flap at the top is able to fold down across the back of the comic book cover. Put the board in so that the shiny side is facing the part of the bag where the fold won’t fold down. Next, put the comic on top of the shiny part of the board. When these two are both inside, comic on-top, flip the bag over, and tape down the bag flap on the back of the comic bag. Do not tape down on the cover, when you tape down, you should see the board, not the comic cover. Taping over the comic cover can result in the tape damaging the front of the comic book cover. Use the tape in a diagonal direction, so that more tape is on the flap than on the other side of the bag. After doing this, place the bagged comic gently down. Once you get enough bagged comics, you can eventually put them in a long box.
